Treat an upgrade as a small migration

Save a recoverable configuration and version record before installing, testing and switching. A new window opening is only the first check: subscriptions, routing, DNS, groups and real applications all need validation.

1. Separate the client, core and configuration

v2rayN manages the interface and configuration; the selected core handles connections. A client update, core update and subscription refresh are different changes. If all three happen together, a failure becomes harder to attribute. Record their current states and change one layer at a time where practical.

At the review date, 2026-10-26, the project's latest stable release is 7.25.6. Its notes explicitly discuss sing-box 1.14 compatibility and changes to Xray configuration output.[1] This version is a dated reference, not a permanent claim about the latest release. Check the official release notes again before acting, especially for breaking changes.

Replacing a core binary alone does not establish that the client can generate the new format it expects. Upstream documentation can be ahead of the client's supported range, and removed fields can prevent a previously working profile from starting.

2. Find the actual configuration store

The official package guide distinguishes portable ZIP distributions from installed packages. Portable distributions generally keep data in their own folder, while installed packages may use the operating system's user-data location.[2] Copying the application directory is therefore not always a configuration backup.

Use the client's command for opening its storage location to verify the path. The official UI guide says the built-in backup and restore feature covers the entire guiConfigs folder; on non-Windows systems, use the .zip extension for the backup.[3] Separately record and save external rules, scripts or custom core files. Do not assume a configuration archive includes every external dependency.

Backup item Why it matters How to check it
Built-in configuration ZIP Preserves client-managed settings Opens successfully and contains plausible, nonempty files
Client and core version record Recreates the compatible combination Includes full versions, platform and architecture
External rules, scripts and custom files Avoids restoring paths to missing files Referenced files exist in a separate copy
Key settings record Makes changes visible Covers proxy, routing, DNS and TUN state
Previous official package Supports an isolated rollback Source and release can be verified

Backups may contain subscription tokens and node credentials. Store them in a protected location. Create a separate sanitized diagnostic copy instead of attaching the complete archive to a public support request.

3. Match the package to platform and architecture

Check the CPU architecture in system information first. x64 and arm64 describe architectures, not full and lightweight editions. Tutorials for other mobile clients are not instructions for installing the v2rayN desktop application.

Platform Selection criteria Baseline in the official v7.x guide
Windows x64 or ARM64 and the desired UI distribution Windows 10 or later; check the particular build
macOS x64 for Intel, ARM64 for Apple Silicon macOS 13.6 or later
Linux Both architecture and distribution package format Debian 12+, Ubuntu 22.04+, Fedora 36+, Red Hat 9+

These are the documented baselines at review time, not a substitute for checking current release assets and core compatibility.[2] DEB packages generally suit Debian or Ubuntu, while RPM packages target the corresponding RPM-based distributions. A filename containing Linux is not enough to establish compatibility.

Check the downloaded filename, size and source. If the publisher supplies a trusted checksum, compare it. Calculating a hash without a trusted reference records the file but does not establish that it came from the official publisher.

4. Validate in a copy or isolated environment

A portable release can be unpacked into a new directory for testing, but do not point both copies at the same data store. Avoid running two instances on the same listener ports. Installed distributions may share user storage; use a separate test account or device if necessary and verify the actual storage location first.

On the first launch, check the basic UI and core, then restore or import configuration gradually. Moving between operating systems changes process names, paths, interface names, permissions and system-proxy behavior. Successful restoration does not remove the need to review platform-specific settings.

Use the same target set before and after migration: an ordinary direct website, a proxy-dependent task, an internal service and an application with a specific routing rule. Mark an internal-service test as not applicable if you do not have one; there is no reason to contact an unfamiliar device just to fill the checklist.

5. Use acceptance checks to decide when to switch

  1. The core starts without new configuration parsing errors.
  2. Subscriptions update and the active node and group memberships remain valid.
  3. Explicit proxy requests succeed and system proxy or TUN capture behaves as intended.
  4. Custom routing, DNS and required internal access pass the same comparison tests.
  5. The client still works after restart and network behavior is recoverable after exit.

Make the new release your daily setup only after these checks pass. Keep the old package and pre-upgrade backup until normal workflows and a subscription refresh have succeeded. Retention depends on usage and storage policy, not an arbitrary universal number of days.

6. Roll back the program and configuration together

If the new client migrated the data format, reinstalling only the old executable may not work. Stop the new instance, preserve its diagnostic information and restore the old version with the pre-upgrade backup in an independent storage location. Do not let two instances edit the same configuration concurrently.

Rollback restores work and helps identify a difference; it is not a long-term reason to keep known-unsafe settings. If the failure involves removed certificate-verification parameters or incompatible core behavior, follow the release notes to repair the configuration and document the smallest reproducible difference.

Can I copy the whole installation across operating systems? Configuration is a starting point, but binaries, absolute paths and permissions are platform-specific. Install the target platform's package and validate again.

Is an archive that opens a sufficient backup test? No. Readability is one check. Recovery also requires validating important settings, external dependencies and actual tasks in an isolated environment.
